Numbers regarding travel in the month of May show signs that new tourist records could be reached in 2023. For the first time ever during the month of May, Málaga airport registered 2,150,259 travelers this year.

Travel to Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, and Alicante is also increasing but at a slower pace.

The Spanish air transport authority, Aena, describes this figure as a milestone. Previously, the two million passenger mark had been reached in the months of July and August in the years 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022, as well as in June and September 2019.

The increase in travel is noticeable when we also consider April 2023 when 2,020,881 travelers were registered at Málaga airport. It was the first time the two-million mark was surpassed in the month of April.

Statistics from Aena show that the airport on the Costa del Sol is growing at a faster pace than other airports.

The numbers of travelers in Madrid and Barcelona are still lower than before the pandemic, while Málaga has increased by ten percent, something that neither Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, nor Alicante have achieved. Here, travel is also increasing but at a slower pace.

During the first five months of this year, Málaga airport registered 729,000 more travelers than the previous record year of 2019.

65.5 percent of tourists arriving in the Andalusia region fly to Málaga. Nearly twelve million tourists have traveled to Andalusia during the first five months of this year.
